Sulphurreal consortium held 27-month project meeting

On 16 december, the Sulphurreal consortium gathered online to discuss the progress in the various project areas. At the 27-month project meeting, the leaders of each work package presented the work of the past months and the current status.

Testing, testing, testing – that is how you could summarise the current phase of the Sulphurreal project. A lot of experimental testing with different samples is ongoing and diverse experimental campaigns are planned for the next months.

Current work includes:
  • Catalytic structures for SO2 disproportionation and SO3 splitting
  • Design modifications of the SO3 splitting reactor
  • Proof-of-concept disproportionation reactor
  • Experimental validation of combustor
  • Flowsheeting and scale-up of process
  • Life Cycle Assessment

The whole consortium is looking forward to the next stages of the project to achieve the goal of storing concentrated solar energy in solid elemental sulphur. The approach is based on a sustainable, continuous cycle process that harnesses and stores solar energy, providing a reliable and sustainable power source.
