EIC Pathfinder Portfolio

Mid to Long Term and Systems Integrated Energy Storage

The EIC – European Innovation Council is Europe’s flagship innovation programme to identify, develop and scale up breakthrough technologies and game changing innovations.

The Energy Storage Portfolio of the European Innovation Council EIC is a collaborative initiative comprising nine research projects. It is funded under the 2022 EIC Pathfinder Challenge call for “Mid to Long Term and Systems Integrated Energy Storage”. Formed to create synergies and foster collaboration, the projects unite under a common umbrella to address shared challenges and opportunities.

The Portfolio addresses the following technical areas: Electrochemical energy storage, thermal energy storage, chemical looping and storage of energy carriers, and thermomechanical energy storage.

Together with Sulphurreal, eight other projects from these areas were selected:

Key Objectives

Key objectives of the Energy Storage Portfolio

  • Strategic Positioning: Position Europe strategically at the forefront of the sustainable technologies for energy systems flexibility and integration of energy technologies through mid to long duration storage assets, without use of Critical Raw Materials and relying on circular and system-integrated resources.
  • European Green Deal Alignment: The overarching goal is to contribute to identifying and accelerating the development of promising technologies, aligning with the European Green Deal targets to combat climate change, global warming, and water and soil pollution.
  • Advancing in Energy Storage: Contribute to identify and accelerate the development of the most promising energy storage technologies to address the EU energy security, while contributing to other sustainability goals such as dispatchability of renewable electricity, demand side management sectors coupling, in agreement with the Repower EU and Green Deal targets.
