The article “Decarbonization in the sulphuric acid industry” co-authored by German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Grillo Chemicals GmbH has been published in Sulphur Magazine. New concepts focusing on the transfer and combination of existing sulphur and sulphuric acid technologies to support the decarbonization of the sulphuric acid industry are being investigated. Three research projects are discussed in this article:
- Sulphur dioxide depolarized electrolysis in a spent sulphuric acid recycling plant,
- Utilization of renewable heat and catalysts in the sulphuric acid splitting process to SO2 for reduction of fossil fuel consumption, and
- Sulphur as an energy vector.
Sulphurreal and the Solid Sulphur (SoSu) cycle
Among other things, the paper highlights the possibilities for sulphur as an energy vector that could overcome the disadvantages of hydrogen. It mentions the investigation of the Sulphurreal project in the Solid Sulphur (SoSu) cycle. The innovative approach for thermochemical direct storage of concentrated solar energy in solid elemental sulphur is presented.
The article emphasizes that the Sulphurreal project as one of the presented approaches carries great promise for a meaningful next step in decarbonization of the sulphur and sulphuric acid industry.
