Sulphurreal consortium held 21-month meeting

08 July 2025, the Sulphurreal project participants held their 21-month project meeting. They met online to update each other on the current status of the various tasks. The leaders of all work packages presented their progress and discussed any development challenges.

Everyone is working together to achieve the goal of storing concentrated solar energy in solid elemental sulphur. The approach is based on a sustainable, continuous cycle process that harnesses and stores solar energy, providing a reliable and sustainable power source.

Current work includes:

  • Catalytic activity and long term operation of SO₃ splitting catalysts
  • Design, simulation, and modelling of SO₃ splitting reactors
  • Development of an electrochemical SO₂ disproportionation reactor
  • Experimental validation of high power density sulphur burner and materials testing
  • Complete process flowsheet development, scale-up, and AI-driven digital twin implementation

The project participants are pleased with the progress made and the milestones achieved so far. The teams are looking forward to the next stages of the project.
