Sulphurreal Stakeholder Workshop will take place on 29 September 2026

Can sulphur provide a practical route for storing, transporting and converting energy at industrial scale? Find out more and join our workshop!

Over the past three years, the Sulphurreal project has investigated a thermochemical energy-storage concept in which thermal energy is stored in elemental sulphur and later converted into electricity. The concept also offers potential links to existing industrial sulphur and sulphuric acid value chains.

Key results and lessons learned of the Sulphurreal project

As the project approaches completion, we invite industry representatives, technology developers and other interested stakeholders to an online workshop presenting the key results and lessons learned from the project.

The workshop will provide a concise overview of:

  • the Sulphurreal concept and its potential industrial configurations;️
  • the current technology readiness of the key process steps, including sulphuric-acid splitting, SO₂ disproportionation and high-power-density combustion of sulphur for gas turbines;
  • how computational materials screening and materials data supported technology development;
  • the environmental performance of the concept compared with relevant alternatives;
  • the techno-economic outlook and potential application cases; and
  • the key opportunities and remaining challenges for further development.

The presentations will be followed by an open Q&A session and panel discussion with the project participants.
