The article “Sulphur Dioxide Disproportionation by Magnesium Sulphite as Intermediate” has been published in the international journal “Processes”.
Developed within the EU-funded SULPHURREAL project, this work investigates an innovative magnesium-mediated thermochemical route for converting sulphur dioxide into elemental sulphur, which can serve as a stable, long-term solar energy storage medium. It is one part of the Sulphurreal cycle.
A technically feasible process
The proposed closed-loop process was experimentally assessed using laboratory-scale reactors and several analytical techniques. The results demonstrate its technical feasibility while highlighting the key challenges for further development, including sulphur selectivity, high-temperature sulphate decomposition, product recovery, and heat integration.
“Processes” is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal that publishes research on processes and systems in the fields of chemistry, biology, materials, energy, environmental science, food, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, automation and control, catalysis, separation, particle technology, and related engineering disciplines. The journal is published online twice a month by MDPI.
